Internship Opportunities
An internship is an experiential learning opportunity that allows students to apply their academic knowledge in the workplace and get valuable job experience. Each year, more than 200 JSOM students are placed in internships across a variety of financial industries. Internship Requirement for JSOM Students (At a Glance)
All JSOM students must complete a major-related internship as part of their degree plan. To meet this requirement, you must:
- Report their internship in Orion: Upload required employer-provided documentation, answer the internship questionnaire, and submit the request.
- Complete the approval process: Your internship request will be reviewed by the Career Management Center, BS Finance Program, and JSOM Advising.
- Complete either FIN 4080 or FIN 4V80: JSOM Advising will notify you about your course registration.
Reporting & Approval Process
Students may complete internships in a wide range of areas, including corporate finance, investment banking, asset management, financial technology, financial planning, real estate, risk management, and insurance services, etc.
You must report your internship in Orion before you start working.Check the Career Management Center’s Management Center’s Reporting & Timelines page for semester reporting deadlines.
Internship must be related to your finance major and completed within the confines of the semester. Students are required to work a minimum of 160 hours. Those enrolling for 3 credit hours internship course must complete at least 240 total hours.
Step 1. Submit your internship in ORION
Upload 1) offer letter and 2) job description.
- Offer Letter (on company letterhead) including:
- Company Name
- Internship Title
- Start & End Date
- Hours Per Week
- Physical Work Location
- Supervisor’s Name & Contact Info
- Job Description
- Job Description (if not already included in the offer letter, then upload the offer letter again)
Step 2. Check the status in Orion until you get a message/email that your internship has been approved.
Step 3. Take one of the finance internship courses
- FIN 4080 Finance Internship (0 credit hour, no tuition)
- FIN 4V80 Practicum in Finance (3 credit hours, tuition applies, you need to work 240+ hours to earn 3 credit hours). To change FIN 4080 to FIN 4V80, contact JSOM Advising.
FIN 4080 and FIN 4V80 are fully online courses with simple assignments in eLearning.
What Can be used as internship alternatives?
- Full-time/part-time job may count as a finance internship if the responsibilities are directly related to finance. If you have been in the position for more than 6 months, you need to complete a “special project” assigned by your supervisor. A special project must involve tasks outside your current job responsibilities.
- Students enrolled in FIN 4380 will receive academic credit for their finance internship experience. The course allows students to reflect on their internship experiences, connect practice with theory, and fulfill degree requirements.
Please note: UTD does not approve the following types of job:
- Independent contractor (IRS Form 1099, instead of W-2)
- 100%, or nearly 100%, commission-based worker
- Field work sales job (vs. an office-based job)
